Expert advice on creating a green garden There are lots of energy saving tips for our homes available but it is also possible to get our gardens more eco-friendly. With this in mind Hampton Court Palace Flower Show sponsor Sadolin has come up with its top tips for a more eco-friendly garden. Sadolin's eco-friendly garden tips
Mulching - Mulching vegetable/fruit/ornamental beds with organic matter such as composted farmyard manure will help retain moisture and suppress weeds. Recycled products - Reusing materials not only makes for a more unique garden but also helps protect resources. Think about using old bricks for paving and railway sleepers or reclaimed floorboards for decking. . Grow your own fruit and veg - Not only does home-grown fruit and veg cut down on your food miles but it tastes better too. If you want to give it a try, go for some raised vegetable and fruit beds, which allow the soil to warm up earlier in the season and extend the cropping period. Be carbon conscious - When it comes to using paints or woodstains, look for products from manufacturers like Sadolin, which minimises its carbon footprint by offsetting the carbon dioxide created in the production and distribution of its portfolio. Companion Planting - Underplant fruit trees with herbs to help guard against pests and diseases without the use of chemicals. Clever composting - Composting is an excellent way to recycle kitchen and garden waste, while also enhancing the quality and texture of the soil. And with some really attractive beehive compost bins out there, there's really no excuse not to get stuck in.
