Plumbing Tips to Keep Your Christmas Drain-Free

A plumbing disaster can strike at any time, but there are steps you can to take. Nobody wants burst water pipes and blocked drains at any time of the year, but a disaster over the Christmas holiday period can ruin more than just furnishings and possessions.

But there are measures households can take to stop plumbing from taking the shine off the holiday season.

Drain Doctor Plumbing has come up with ten tips to help avoid any expensive insurance payouts or inconvenience.

Top ten handy hints for perfect plumbing

1 - Locate and label your main stop valve. It is on the incoming mains water supply and is often under the kitchen sink.

2 - Stop valves tend to corrode slightly with time, so once every six months check it is working by exercising the valve twice from fully open to fully closed and back again (and always back the valve off 'half a turn' from fully open once you are done).

3 - Make sure all your pipes and storage tanks are properly lagged and covered, especially in roof areas and attics.

4 - Open the loft door to warm the roof area in cold weather. This will help to stop pipes up there freezing.

5 - Inspect cold water cisterns (they are probably in your loft) annually. If there are any signs of corrosion or leaking, contact a reputable plumber.

6 - Dripping taps, toilets that do not flush properly and water coming out of overflow pipes are sure signs that your plumbing needs an overhaul.

7 - Have all heating units and controls regularly serviced by a professional. Remember, anyone working on gas appliances must be registered with CORGI, the Council for Registered Gas Installers.

8 - Always ask your plumber if there is a call out charge and find out exactly what it covers. Some companies may make a charge while others do not.

9 - Ask for a free and complete visual inspection and report of your plumbing system while your plumber is at your house. Take advantage of his or her expertise.

10 - Plumbing is becoming increasingly technical. Always seek a qualified professional plumber.
