Step Up to the Perfect Wooden Floor

Wooden flooring is back in style When it comes to flooring, this year's message is 'less is more'.

Householders across the country are lifting up their carpets and exposing their floorboards to create a clean, contemporary look.

And many are putting themselves top of the style stakes by applying a top quality floor varnish or oil to bring out the wood's natural beauty.

For householders currently contemplating the above, wood experts Sadolin have compiled the following advice:

  • Varnish should be used for high traffic areas or where you want to change the natural colour of the floor boards. This will provide an attractive finish and a good level of protection.

  • A floor oil is more suited to those wanting to achieve a natural, minimalist look, which brings the warm, rich natural tones of the floor to the surface. Oil leaves a silky sheen but will not change the wood's colour.

    To apply either varnish or oil to a wood floor follow these six simple steps:

  • 1. Sweep or vacuum clean the floor, removing any stains with a damp cloth. Engrained dirt can be removed by gently using a fine nylon scouring pad (do not use steel wool or metallic bristles as this can discolour the wood).
  • 2. Dampen a clean cloth with methylated spirits and wipe over the surface to remove grease and resin.
  • 3. Make sure the floor is completely dry and that adjacent areas and walls are protected, ensuring all screws and nails are below the timber surface. If required, sand the floorboards back to the bare timber using a drum sander and an edge sander.
  • 4. Starting at the far corner of the room, apply the oil or varnish with a floor brush or floor cloth in a full flowing coat, in the direction of the grain.
  • 5. When using floor oil remove any excess after 15-20 minutes and let the surface dry for 20 minutes before polishing the surface with a lint-free floor cloth. If using varnish, allow the first coat to dry and apply a second coat, following the instructions on the can.
  • 6. The floor may be used after approximately four hours if using floor oil, but should be left for more than 24 hours if using varnish. Make sure the surface is completely dry, before bringing furniture or rugs back into the room.
