A few simple home security steps can allow homeowners to relax when away Nearly three quarter of homeowners worry about being burgled when away on holiday, new research shows. But 85 per cent of these find it easier to enjoy their holiday as a result of additional security measures such as an alarm or CCTV. These are the findings of a survey by home security manufacturer Micromark, which is sponsoring this year's National Home Security Week, taking place at the height of the holiday season in August. Almost half of burglars say an empty house is an easy target, but visible security measures such as an alarm or CCTV would deter more than two thirds of them. "Everyone should take some basic steps to prevent burglars having an opportunity to help themselves to your possessions, especially while you are on holiday," said Mick Laurie, chief executive of Crimestoppers. National Home Security Week is designed to encourage people to take simple preventative measures to improve their home security. The availability of DIY home security systems with easy-to-follow instructions has increased, and basic CCTV systems are available from just £29.99 including VAT. "Coming home to find you have been burgled can ruin your holiday," said Nathan Cole, security product manager at Micromark. "From under £30 consumers can protect their most valuable assets – as well as treasured possessions that cannot be replaced, such as jewellery, heirlooms and family mementoes. Providing extra peace of mind, our DIY security systems can effectively protect any type of property from compact city apartments to rambling country houses." Simple home security measures CCTV A Standard Black and White CCTV system can be purchased from B&Q, Focus and Homebase for just £29.99. The system plugs into your existing TV and has a built in microphone to allow you to see and hear what is going on outside your home. Simply change TV channel to see the camera image. Alarms The Easy Fit Wirefree Dual Powered Alarm System includes three wirefree PIR movement sensors, one wirefree magnetic door/window contact and a remote key fob with arm/disarm and panic button modes. The alarm is totally wirefree, making it ideal for DIY installation, and can be bought for just £99.99 from Argos. Security lighting Security lighting can also be purchased for under £25. The Amalfi PIR Security Lantern (RRP £19.98 at B&Q) or the Taranto Wall Light with PIR (RRP £24.98 at B&Q) both have movement detectors that switch on the light when anyone approaches at night. Timers Timers can be used to turn on lights, radios, and TV sets either randomly or at regular intervals to give the impression a home is occupied. Programmable Digital Timers from Micromark are available from as little as £7.99. For further information and home security advice, go to: www.homesecurityweek.co.uk
